What is SMA coaxial RF connector

Materials SMA connector bodies are typically brass with a nickel or gold finish or stainless steel with a passivated or gold finish. Connector center contacts/pins are usually brass or gold plated copper.

SMA (Subminiature Type A) coaxial RF connectors were developed in the 1960s as a subminiature connector interface for RF cables with a helical coupling mechanism. Since then, many variants of the SMA series have been developed to meet the changing requirements of the RF and microwave industries.

JAE Terminated SMA Connectors

The connector has a characteristic impedance of 50 Ω and was originally designed for use from DC (0 Hz) to 12 GHz. However, this has been expanded over time and variants designed for 18 GHz and 26.5 GHz are now available.

Standard polarity SMA male connectors have a 0.9mm diameter center pin surrounded by an internally threaded barrel, and standard SMA female connectors have a center sleeve surrounded by an externally threaded barrel. Gender assignments correspond to the innermost electronic components. The diameter of the center pin is the same as the center of the RG402 coaxial cable, so connections can be made without interruption. The pins are formed from the coaxial cable itself.

All styles of reverse polarity RP-SMA can reverse the gender of the interface to allow port identification and prevent the wrong antenna or device from mating with the device. The pins and sockets are interchanged so that the male RP-SMA has a central socket surrounded by an internally threaded barrel, while the female RP-SMA has a central pin and an externally threaded barrel.

Environmental requirements dictate the choice of materials for making connectors and surface plating. Use in harsh environments requires popular standard SMA connectors and customer specific custom designed IP68 versions.

SMA connectors typically have brass or stainless steel bodies. The finish on SMA connectors is usually nickel or gold, while the stainless steel body has a passivation or gold finish. The center contact/pin of an SMA connector is usually made of brass or gold-plated copper.
